Colorful Kitchens – 2020 Trends

Colorful kitchens is one trend to look forward to in 2020. The addition of color puts more energy in the kitchen and makes for a happy, comfortable space.

EARTHY TONES INSPIRED BY NATURE

Warmer tones like mushroom gray and smoky white will likely replace colder grays and stark white. Browns are gaining momentum and color is making an impact in kitchens. With a focus on health and wellbeing, people are gravitating to nature’s neutral colors, earthy greens and bold shades, with hues inspired by the earth sea and sky.

MORE DARING USE OF COLOR

We have seen deep bold tones like hunter green, emerald green and navy in the kitchen this past year. Blues and greens will continue to influence but will be married with earthy tans and browns. Look for “freshened” bold colors to replace jewel tones. Colors like sharp reds, light teal, turquoise and aqua.

BLUE – THE COLOR OF THE YEAR

Blue will play a significant role in 2020 colorful kitchens. The Pantone Color of the year is Classic Blue; Sherwin Williams’ 2020 color is Rich Navy Blue; and PPG paint is featuring their cobalt blue hue called Chinese Porcelain this year. Beautiful blues in varying shades from light to gray-blue to navy have calming qualities that induce a sense of comfort.

CABINETS OF LIGHTER WOOD TONES

White Shaker cabinets will continue to be the most popular cabinet in kitchens, but wood tones will remain a strong second. Mid-century modern tones in wood are predicted to emerge this year with lighter tones like teak, hickory, white oak and walnut. Blue cabinets will likely find comfort in colorful kitchens, too, either as tuxedo kitchens with blue lowers and light upper cabinets or on contrasting kitchen islands.

KITCHEN ISLANDS & COUNTERTOPS

The kitchen island is the focal point of many colorful kitchens. Nearly half of kitchen remodelers who upgrade their kitchen island choose a contrasting color for the base, with island colors of gray and blue often chosen. When an island top is selected to contrast with the countertops, wood is the number one choice for the island top. For countertops, quartz will continue to dominate over marble given its advantages of durability and color/texture selection. On the horizon are porcelain slab countertops which are durable and absolutely beautiful in pattern and visual depth!

FEATURE-WALL BACKSPLASHES

Subway tile is everywhere, but now there is a twist. Tiles in unique dimensions, sizes and shapes are emerging, as is, new ways to lay the tile such as vertical and herringbone patterns. Homeowners looking to fully embrace color in the kitchen are creating feature-wall backsplashes that extend from the countertop all the way to the ceiling!

FLOORING & MORE

Wood tones dominate flooring, whether it is engineered hardwood, laminates, luxury vinyl or wood-look tiles. Colored appliances, often following the color of the year, are clever additions to keep the colorful kitchen a fun place to gather.

A New Year Brings a New Pantone Color of the Year: Greenery

A New Year Brings a New Pantone Color of the Year: Greenery

A yellowish green, Pantone’s Greenery is reminiscent of nature and reminds us all to slow down a bit and smell the great outdoors.

It’s critical that artists, designers, manufacturers and printers around the world “speak” a common “color language.” Toward that end, Pantone’s proprietary Color Matching System helps ensure standardized reproduction of colors across geographies, users and applications. Pantone’s system includes over 1000 unique colors, each of which can be simulated with a specific mix of 14 base pigments. Each color is assigned a distinct, numeric identifier.

Like other companies involved in the design industry, Pantone stays abreast of evolving trends and changes in consumer tastes. Each year the company selects a representative “Color of the Year” that it believes best captures the world’s collective mood. They think of it as a snapshot of worldwide cultural trends at a particular point in time.

For 2017, the company sees Greenery, Pantone 15-0343, as best fitting the bill. It’s a soft and warm shade of green that Pantone describes as “refreshing and revitalizing” and “symbolic of new beginnings.”

They believe Greenery connotes “flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors,” reminding people to “take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate.”

“Considering the harried pace of society today and the rapidity of technological change, Pantone’s message seems timely and spot-on,” suggests small-business owner Mark Shook. He and his sales team at Butcher Block Co., an online-only store specializing in kitchen furniture and equipment, much like the color trend-setters at Pantone, are in position to observe changing consumer tastes. “Homeowners and apartment dwellers view kitchens as their safe rooms – quiet and soothing places where they can get away from the hustle and bustle of the modern world. That’s why many are opting for naturally beautiful wood countertops and John Boos butcher block kitchen islands and tables with bases painted Basil Green or Clover Green,” Shook opines, in support of Pantone’s 2017 selection, Greenery.
