The online store, Butcher Block Co., recently expanded their kitchen-and-home products line into wood shelving. They now offer beautiful floating wood shelves in two styles: live-edge and straight-edge.
“Live edge” is the term used to describe the edge of wood that reveals the actual outer surface of a piece of a tree with its bark shaved away. Each piece of live-edge wood is distinctively different, much like human fingerprints. And “floating shelf” refers to the perception that the shelf appears to somehow float on the wall, since it is not attached to the wall via any visible hardware, such as a wall bracket or brace.
“Live-edge wood countertops, tables and shelves are a great way to introduce nature into your home,” says company President and CEO, Kathleen Grodsky. “Wood with natural edges is typically both beautifully organic and functionally strong.”
Of course, natural, rustic-looking shelving is not ideal for all home interiors. Homeowners seeking wood shelves with a more contemporary look might prefer straight-edge shelving that still shows off the natural beauty of wood, but lacks any live edges.
Both shelf styles – live-edge and straight-edge – are available in three different types, or species, of wood – Maple, Walnut and Cherry. Maple is known for its high-level hardness and neutral colors: typically cream and light-to-medium brown hues. Walnut features bolder colors: creamy whites and yellows contrasted with medium and dark browns. Cherry wood tends to reveal a tinge of light pink which can patina or darken over time.
In addition, Butcher Block Co. offers floating shelves in a fourth look they call Ebonized. To achieve the look of ebony – a very dark brown, mainly tropical tree – dark stain is applied to Maple wood.
Butcher Block Co. offers both live-edge and straight-edge floating shelves in two different lengths: 36 and 52 inches. Whereas straight-edge shelves are 8 inches wide, live-edge shelves can vary in width from 6 to 9 inches along the length of the shelf, depending on the natural shape of the tree trunk. All shelves are 1-5/8 inches thick.
But what really sets these shelves apart is their ease of installation, according to CEO Grodsky. She explains, “The EZ-LOCK Cleat system, for which a patent is pending, leaves no hooks or brackets visible, yet provides sturdy support: up to 10 pounds for each 18 inches in length. A long brace is first installed on the wall, then a slot carved in the rear edge of the shelf is positioned over the wall-mounted brace. This delivers the floating look that homeowners seek.”
