The natural oil found in tropical teak wood makes it resistant to water - an attribute that makes it a perfect wood for cutting boards and butcher blocks, not just boat decks. In addition, teak exhibits high tensile strength - another very desirous attribute. As if this weren't enough, teak is a gorgeous wood. It features a palette of yellow, tan and golden brown.
Teak has high tensile strength to begin with. So cutting boards made of teak and constructed in end-grain style are off the charts. In end-style butcher boards, individual blocks are stood on end and thermo-bonded into a rigid unibody that can take a pounding and still retain its great looks. Standing upright, each individual block contributes its vertical strength to the overall sturdiness of the cutting board. Moreover, the fiber-rich ends (hence the name) of these pieces come together to create the resilient but tough cutting surface that distinguishes an end-grain board. That's the paradox. Wood fibers are strong enough to resist nicks and gouges from sharp blades, but forgiving enough not to dull them nearly as quickly as are other styles of butcher blocks. Better yet, each end displays rich grain patterns and in composite, create a visually intriguing checkerboard tapestry.
Make good use of the spacious 20" by 14" cutting surface on this hefty 2-1/2- inch-thick board. One feature you'll especially like is the cutout on the underside of one long side. It's designed so you can slide a bowl, a plate or another cutting board for that matter, under the teak board to catch the ingredients you've sliced, chopped or diced.
