The Butcher Block Co. Introduces Waterfall-Edge Kitchen Islands

Leading Online Seller of Wood Counter and Island Tops Hopes to Tap into This Hot Kitchen Design Trend

In their 2020 U.S. Kitchen Trends Study, Houzz Inc. determined that, “Nearly two-thirds of renovated kitchens feature an island (61%). A third of homeowners add an island if they didn’t already have one (33%), while others upgrade an existing island (22%) or keep their island as is (5%).”

A recent kitchen design trend that’s growing in popularity involves the incorporation of Waterfall Islands into kitchens. Waterfall kitchen islands are distinguished by this defining feature: the island’s wooden top continues vertically down one or both ends of the island, much as river water flows horizontally before suddenly dropping into a waterfall.

According to Kathleen Grodsky, Vice President of Marketing for the Butcher Block Co., “It’s crucial that each horizontal-to-vertical transition in a waterfall island or counter top appear to be seamless. When executed to near-perfection, the illusion of a continuous-flow of material from horizontal to vertical can profoundly impact the overall look and feel of a kitchen.”

“An added advantage of a waterfall island or peninsula,” Grodsky added, “is that it can double as a breakfast bar and can even accommodate diners seated on bar stools that can be hidden away beneath the island’s top.”

The Butcher Block Co. will make custom, plank-style waterfall islands in 15 different wood species. Options include such classic woods as Maple, Walnut, Cherry, and Oak, plus distinctive but less mainstream wood types such as Hickory, Knotty Alder, Mahogany and even Brazilian Cherry.

BB Co. waterfall islands can be finished to ship either fully pre-assembled, or knocked-down and ready to be assembled on site (in cases where home doorways are not wide enough to accommodate a pre-assembled island).

Besides kitchen counter and islands tops, BB Co. sells butcher-block tables for baking, meal prep, and dining; kitchen carts for prepping and serving meals or wine; plus a wide variety of cutting boards and chopping blocks. The company positions itself as “The experts on all things butcher block.”
