Boos & Co. has been making butcher blocks for quite a long time – since 1887, to be precise. Early on those Boos Blocks were made of Sycamore wood, but over time the company’s choice of materials has shifted to keep in step with the changing tastes of the millions of professional and amateur American chefs who swear by the Boos brand. Since American Black Walnut continues to gain popularity, the company saw fit to launch this new line of Walnut-top Gathering Blocks in 2016.
With three sizes to choose among, you’re sure to find one that fits your kitchen, pantry, breakfast nook, dining room or foyer. That’s right; while they make excellent kitchen work tables, they’re equally well suited to serve as buffet tables or as beautiful designer tables with rustic looks and an heirloom feel. All three sizes stand 36” tall – a comfortable height for a food-prep table. And all measure 24 inches in width (depth). So you guessed it, the three models differ only in length. The smallest version – the Walnut Gathering Block I - is nearly square - 25 inches long and 24 inches deep. It comes with a single wicker basket storage drawer. The middle size is 36 inches long and includes two basket drawers. The Walnut Gathering Block III is fitted with three wicker baskets and stretches 48 inches in length.
First, here’s a brief explanation of what distinguishes an end-grain style butcher block. In this particular block you’ll find 4-inch lengths of Black Walnut wood aligned vertically so that their fibrous ends form its top and bottom – the surface which butchers relish for their toughest meat carving and chopping jobs. An important advantage is that these highly fibrous surfaces absorb, rather than thwart, sharp blades, helping the chef’s cutlery stay sharper longer. Another advantage is that the block's top surface is simply gorgeous. It shows off the wide range of colors found in Black Walnut – including creams and chocolate browns – as well as walnut’s grain patterns, characterized by fairly distinct growth rings.
You have 9 varied options for the block’s hardwood legs and slatted lower storage shelf. If you’d like to continue the top’s dark look into the table’s base, you might consider walnut stain or Caviar Black. If you’d like the eye to focus on the walnut butcher block itself, you could select an unobtrusive color, such as natural maple, Alabaster White or Basil Green. Take note that the table's base presents a distressed finish (i.e., some wood grain shows through), in order to reinforce the rustic feel of the overall piece.

Boos will either repair or replace a product determined to be damaged or defective. This warranty does not apply to damage resulting from normal wear and tear, accidents, abuse, neglect, misuse, alterations* or exposure to extreme conditions. Nor does it pertain to wood products ordered unfinished. Neither Boos nor Butcher Block Co. will be held liable for any loss or damage arising from use of products or for any consequential damages.
*Cutting into a Boos countertop (e.g., trimming its length or width or executing a miter cut or a cutout) will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Boos & Co. warrants that the exact length, width and thickness of any countertop will not vary from specifications by more than 1/8 of an inch.
If you decide to cancel your order, please call us immediately. Typically, we are able to cancel an order and issue a full refund if production of the item(s) has not yet begun. If an order is already “in production,” it cannot be canceled for any reason.
If you are unhappy with your purchase for any reason, you may return or exchange it within 30 days of the date of purchase. A 20% restocking fee will apply, since all John Boos products are made-to-order. Plus, you will be responsible for return shipping costs. Boos custom countertops cannot be returned or exchanged, unless the goods arrived in damaged condition and you wrote the word "Damaged" on the shipping receipt.
If you find the identical, brand-new product for less (including shipping & handling) on another website within 3 days of your purchase, email us the URL of the webpage where you found the lower-priced offer. If the online seller is an authorized John Boos dealer, we will refund the difference. Butcher Block Co. will not always be able to match a lower-priced offer (e.g., in cases where doing so would violate legal agreements between us and our manufacturer-partners) and any refund may be limited (e.g., in cases where the competing offer is below our total cost).
