Oktoberfest 2018 Is Now Officially Underway in Munich, Germany

Over Six Million People Are Expected to Attend the “Greatest Festival on Earth”

Saturday saw the start of the 2018 rendition of Oktoberfest – the world’s largest Volksfest, or public festival featuring German food, beer and wine, plus amusement rides and games of chance and skill.

Oktoberfest – an annual celebration of Bavarian traditions involving dress, music, food and drink – attracts millions from around the world to Munich, Bavaria, Germany each fall. This year’s funfest runs from Saturday, September 22nd through Sunday, October 7th. Over 500 businesses have registered to exhibit and operate at this year’s festival, which will encompass 85 acres and employ about 13,000 people.

Fun and harrowing amusement rides are key to attracting families with children. Among this year’s new and zany attractions is the “Pendulum of Chaos,” which slingshots in all directions riders situated inside enclosed cabins. The “Predator” flips and tumbles riders seated in gondolas attached to hydraulic poles. And the “Humoristic Velodrome” challenges riders to steer hard-to-handle bicycles rigged with offset axles and other troublesome quirks.

Citywide celebrations of Oktoberfest are not limited to Munich by any means. For example, since 1976 Oktoberfest Zinzinnati has attracted half a million visitors over one weekend each fall to downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, in tribute to the city’s Germanic roots.

Other cities across the USA are teaming up with corporate sponsors to build civic pride and camaraderie along with brand awareness and goodwill. San Francisco will stage Oktoberfest by the Bay 2018 in association with the United German-American Societies with promotional support provided by the Spaten beer brand. And this year’s Mountain View Oktoberfest will be presented by Steins Beer Garden and the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce.

Marketers worldwide welcome the advent of Oktoberfest each year since the world-famous celebration presents countless opportunities for promotional tie-ins. Many stores offer discounts during or around the Bavarian bash. One such retailer is Butcher Block Co. – an online seller of kitchen countertops, furniture and accessories. Through the end of October they’re offering 5% savings via a promotion they’re calling “Bloktoberfest” – a mashup of the words block (as in butcher block) and Oktoberfest, of course.

Marketing VP, Kathleen Grodsky, explains, “Many of the products Butcher Block Co. sells, such as cutting boards, chopping blocks, knives and knife blocks, are perfect fits for anyone who celebrates the holiday with traditional German sausage. Plus, the 5% discount can be applied to any large purchase as well, such as a portable kitchen island or even a butcher block countertop.”
